How does our landscape improve our health?

Landscape architects have always understood the benefits that contact with nature and the outdoors can have on mental well-being. It is our mission to promote the importance of the outdoor space in any development regardless of its size. A well-designed space can have a enormous social and mental health benefits for those who use it, here’s how:

1. Reducing stress: Spending time in natural environments can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Exposure to natural settings has been shown to lower levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, and improve mood

2. Boosting mood: Nature has a positive effect on mood and can increase feelings of happiness and well-being. Research has shown that even short periods of time spent in nature can improve mood and reduce negative emotions (hence our company name!).

3. Improving cognitive function: Exposure to natural environments has been linked to improved cognitive function, including enhanced attention and memory. Spending time in nature can also help to reduce mental fatigue and improve focus.

4. Promoting physical activity: Many natural environments offer opportunities for physical activity, such as hiking, walking, or cycling. Regular physical activity is known to have a positive effect on mental health, including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

5. Increasing social connectedness: Spending time in the outdoors can also promote social connectedness and strengthen social ties. Participating in outdoor activities with friends or family members can help to strengthen relationships and improve overall well-being.

6. Creating a sense of place: Landscapes can help to create a sense of identity and attachment to a place, which can improve social well-being. For example, a well-designed public park can become a symbol of civic pride and a gathering place for the community, strengthening social ties and a sense of belonging.

4. Enhancing safety and security: Well-designed landscapes can also enhance safety and security, which can improve social well-being. For example, a well-lit park with clear sight lines can deter crime and create a sense of safety for users.

5. Fostering environmental stewardship: Landscapes can also foster a sense of environmental stewardship and promote social well-being. For example, a community garden can encourage people to take care of the environment and work together to create a beautiful and productive space.

Whether it's taking a walk in a local park, drinking coffee and watching the world go by in a town centre, hiking in the mountains, or spending time at the beach, spending time outdoors can help to reduce stress, boost mood, and promote overall well-being. Our work as landscape architects enables people to experience and care for their natural environments. By living in harmony with the natural world it will, in turn, look after us.
